5 ways design can improve the productivity of your office

The impact of office design on the peace of mind and productivity of your staff is more important than you think and it needn’t cost the earth to make a positive shift in the right direction. With a few simple design fixes in your office you will be pleasantly surprised at the affect it can have. Let’s take a quick look at the design tweaks you can make:

office productivity

#1. De-clutter

Its sounds simple but if you walk into any office, some desks will look like they’ve been ransacked. Keeping a tidy desk increases productivity, it’s as simple as that. Therefore, make sure that your team have sufficient files, filing space, in and out trays, desk organisers to keep pens etc. Encourage scanning of documents rather than printing and even go to the trouble of training your team about the benefits of a ‘clean desk’ policy. They might whinge at first but they’ll thank you for it later!

#2. Colour

Injecting a bit of colour into your office is well known for lifting the mood and boosting productivity. Corporate Greys and Blues can be a bit dispiriting so by introducing some bold colours, maybe in wall art or accent walls, you will see a psychological change in the way your teams behave and become motivated.

#3. Nature

Having a bit of Greenery in the office is good for the soul. Not only does it provide oxygen and filter the air from mould and bacteria, it also makes people feel more relaxed and in-tune with their environment. Scientific studies have shown that having plants in the office boosts productivity and cognitive attention.

#4. Let there be light

This isn’t always possible but if you do have access to natural light in your office, then it pays to make the most of it. Natural light in the office helps to improve energy, creativity and productivity so if you can, make sure that as many desks as possible are close to a window or benefit from a skylight. If this isn’t possible, then the use of indirect light can be effective. Indirect light is where light bounces off a wall or a ceiling rather than directly on your staff and this is known to have a more relaxing and calming effect.

#5. Time to break out

Creating a space for your teams to take a break and chill out can have the same affects as a ‘power nap’. It allows people to escape the workspace for a while, re-charge their batteries, stretch their legs and re-motivate themselves for more activity.
